Staff Report

The opening week of the winter sports season provided plenty of excitement for our PressBox812 Sports-area programs. From

From blowout wins to career-high performances to a plethora of pins on the mat and a little bit of everything in between, fans definitely received their money’s worth when entering gymnasiums.

All of the excitement also provided plenty of nominations for our first winter season Athlete of the Week, sponsored by Landry Masonry Construction:

RIGLEY GOODMAN — The Sullivan girls basketball freshman had quite the debut. The undersized guard poured in a game-high 21 points to lead the Lady Arrows to a win on the road at Vincennes Lincoln on opening night. Just for good measure Goodman also tallied a game-high 16 points in the Arrows’ road win at White River Valley. Goodman also came away with seven total steals on the defensive end of the court.

MADELYN KENNETT — The Shakamak junior set a new career high with 27 points in the Lady Lakers season-opening win against West Vigo. Prior to the game, Kennett’s highest point total was 16 points.

RACHEL RAMIREZ — The Sullivan junior picked up five wins in the first ever girls wrestling tournament hosted by the Arrows. Ramirez dominated all five of her opponents, winning by a first-period fall in every match on the way to winning the 130-pound title.

SHELBY SEAY — The North Central senior reached the 1,000-point milestone by pouring in 24 points in the Ladybirds’ win over Clay City. In three games, Seay netted 56 points while leading the team in rebounds (19) and steals (19) and assists (18). North Central won all three games, including knocking off Class 4A opponent Terre Haute North.

HANNAH STEPP — Making her North Central debut, the West Vigo transfer netted a career-high 22 points including six made shots from 3-point range in the win over Dugger Union. Stepp added 24 more points in the Ladybirds final two games of the week.
