Each week PressBox812 Sports will highlight significant accomplishments from local athletes. 

 

From the list of nominees, one winner for boys and one winner for girls will be announced as Athletes of the Week.

The following are nominees for the past week:

 

BOYS

 

AIDEN BARBER — The Shakamak sophomore picked up a trio of Top-10 finishes during the week. Barber ran a personal-best time on his way to a 9th-place finish at the Clay City Invite to start the week before placing 8th at the Greene County Invite and 7th at the Washington Invite. 

 

SAM FATHAUER — The Sullivan senior found the back of the net six times during the Arrows 8-0 win over Brown County on Saturday. Fathauer also added an assist in the win.

 

PAUL RIDGWAY — The Sullivan sophomore starting quarterback tossed a 76-yard touchdown pass and also rushed for a touchdown in the Arrows loss to arch rival Linton on Friday.

The lefty completed 12 passes for 155 yards and added another 52 on the ground.

 

HAYDEN SCHULTZ — The North Central quarterback passed for a career-best 230 yards and tossed a pair of touchdowns in the T-Birds’ loss at Red Hill (Ill.) on Saturday. Schultz also added 40 yards on the ground.

 

GREYDYN WALTERS — The T-Bird hauled in five receptions for 92 yards including a touchdown and added another score on the ground during Saturday’s loss.

 

 

 

GIRLS

 

AYANNA CLARK — The Shakamak middle hitter recorded a match-high 14 kills to go along with a pair of stuffs in helping the Lakers to a win at North Knox on Thursday. For the week, Clark finished with 30 kills and five blocked shots.

 

RACHEL ESLINGER — The Sullivan sophomore setter had a monster week, handing out 114 assists in just three matches. Eslinger passed out 48 assists in the Arrows win over 4A Terre Haute North. For the week, the sophomore also added 43 digs and served up seven aces.

 

LESLIE KAETZEL — The North Knox midfielder recorded her second goal of the season in the Warriors 2-0 win over Owen Valley. The win was the first of the year for the Lady Warriors.

 

MALLI LYONS — The North Knox senior was all over the floor in the Warriors loss to Shakamak. Lyons came up with 41 digs in the loss, which was just one shy of tying the school record for most in a single match.

 

JORDYN SMITH — After being recognized for breaking the Dugger Union Community Schools record for points in a single match earlier in the season, Smith recorded 40 digs in the Bulldogs’ loss to North Central.
