Voting for Athletes of the Week — sponsored by Landry Masonry Construction — ended late Thursday night with a pair of Sullivan athletes coming out on top.
In the boys race, Sullivan football player Laytin Huff narrowly defeated Arrows’ tennis player Andrew Jackson.
Huff received 932 votes which was just 15 more than Jackson.
The girls race was closer as well with Sullivan volleyball standout Jacie Wilson coming out on top with 477 votes. The senior received 40 more votes than Shakamak golfer Aubree Langford.
Huff, nominated for the second time in as many weeks, rushed for a career-high 163 yards in the Arrows’ week 2 loss against South Vermillion.
Wilson recorded 25 kills, including 14 in a win over South Vermillion last week. The senior also served up eight aces.
As part of the Staff pick, a second boys winner was also awarded. After producing a career night in a week 2 win over Eastern Greene, North Knox senior Brennan Messel is the PressBox812 Sports selection for Athlete of the Week.
Messel set career highs in pass completions (15) and passing yards (299) to go along with 57 rushing yards and a total of three touchdowns. The game also marked the first time Messel had ever eclipsed 100 yards passing in the Warriors’ run-dominant offensive playbook.
