SOFTBALL
SHAKAMAK 12, North Knox 11: After pitching changes both teams settled into Friday night’s game. But the Lakers’ 9-run second frame proved to be too costly for the hosts to overcome.
The Shakamak offense erupted for nine runs in the top of the second to erase a 7-0 deficit.
The second started innocently as freshman Ava Landry reached base on a dropped third strike. After Clara Barber worked a walk, Peyton Gambill put the Lakers on the board with an RBI single to center. Gambill would later on cap the frame with a 2-run double and the Lakers never relinquished the lead.
Jama Ewers and Mattilyn Hill delivered run-scoring hits in the inning while Madelyn Kennett and Barber coaxed bases-loaded walks.
The Lakers would add a single tally in the third (Hill sacrifice fly) and two in the fourth (wild pitch) to build a 12-7 advantage.
But the Warriors would not go quietly.
Delani Pryor recorded an RBI groundout, scoring Malli Lyons before Ellie Allen delivered an RBI single to left, scoring Baylee McClure. North Knox added two more runs in the frame when freshman Ashley Ramirez lifted a fly ball to the outfield which was misplayed with Allen and Brooklynn Smith racing around the bases.
Lyons and McClure worked walks in the last of the seventh inning, but the threat ended on a grounder to second base to end the game.
For the game, the Warriors outhit Shakamak, 12-8. Seven of North Knox’s base knocks came in the 7-run first inning.
Javen Miller started the big inning with a single and capped the frame with a 2-run triple.
Allen had a 2-run double in the inning, while McClure and Ramirez also delivered run-scoring hits.
Kennett pitched the final six innings to earn the win for the Lakers. The junior allowed just two earned runs and fanned seven batters.
North Knox bounced back from the tough loss with a road win Saturday morning against Bloomfield, 5-4.
Unlike Friday, one big inning for the Warriors was good enough.
McClure capped the Warriors’ 5-run fifth inning with a grand slam to help erase a 2-0 deficit.
Audrey Worstell worked a bases-loaded walk from the No. 9 position in the lineup ahead of McClure’s blast.
Allen doubled in the win and Ally Crist went the distance to earn the win in the circle.
Earlier in the week, North Knox cruised past North Central, 13-1.
McClure (3), Crist (2) and Jonna Myers (2) combined for seven of the Warriors’ 11 hits in the win.
Crist and Allen recorded doubles while Myers drove in four runs.
McClure swiped three bases.
Crist scattered four hits and fanned seven batters in the complete-game win.
North Knox takes a 5-7 record into next week.
Shakamak is 5-8 on the season after a pair of wins in the week. The Lakers opened the week with an impressive 16-7 win over Class 4A Bloomington North.
Jama Ewers doubled in part of a big 3 for 5 night at the plate while driving home five runs in the Lakers’ romp.
Ayanna Clark and Peyton Gambill recorded a pair of hits apiece in the win.
Brylie Wilson scattered eight hits in the complete-game win inside the circle.
SULLIVAN 10, Brown County 0: One night after dropping a tough 8-5 decision against Western Indiana Conference rival South Putnam, the Lady Arrows bounced back with the shutout on Wednesday.
Addie Fosdick smacked a pair of solo home runs in the win while Aphtyn Earley and Jaylynn Hobbs also left the yard for Sullivan.
Hobbs and freshman Hallie Howard both wrapped out three hits apiece in part of the Arrows’ 13-hit attack.
Mylee Vandeventer allowed just three hits while fanning seven batters to earn the complete-game win.
In Tuesday’s loss, Sullivan could not overcome the Eagles’ 6-run second inning.
Fosdick slugged a 2-run homer in the top of the fifth inning which pulled the Arrows’ to within 6-5 but the hosts added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the frame.
Sullivan had the same amount of defensive errors (6) and hits on offense (6).
With the pair of games, the Lady Arrows are now 11-6 on the season.
BASEBALL
SULLIVAN 8, Bloomfield 0: Ty Hamilton tossed a no-hitter with 15 punchouts as the Arrows capped a 2-0 week, improving to 13-2 on the season.
A throwing error, on a bunt, and a pair of walks are the only base runners the visiting Cards would muster against the Arrows’ powerful righthander.
Carter Mischer drove in a pair of runs in the home half of the second inning for the only runs the Arrows would need in the game.
A sacrifice fly by Jaden Norris and RBI singles from Hunter Mason and Spencer Hanks capped Sullivan’s 5-run second frame.
Mason (3) and Mischler (2) combined for five hits in the win. Mason drove in three runs and Hamilton scored twice.
One night earlier, Mason and Hamilton went deep in the Arrows’ 13-2 win over South Putnam.

Norris went the distance on the bump, scattering five hits and recorded 10 punchouts in the win.
Eastern Greene 1, Shakamak 0: The host Thunderbirds broke through with a walk-off double in the last of the seventh inning, sending the Lakers to their fourth straight loss.
Shakamak had a pair of runners on base in the fourth and sixth inning but could not come through with a clutch hit.
Dolton Fiscus picked up three of the Lakers’ four hits in the loss while Jackson Roberts added a single.
Ian Samm was the tough-luck loser on the hill, allowing just three hits and fanning nine batters in the complete-game loss.
Shakamak is 4-5 on the season.
RIVET 8, North Knox 2: Braxton Yenne and freshman Carter Becher recorded two hits apiece but it was not enough for the Warriors.
The Patriots put crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the third (3), fourth (2) and seventh (2) innings in the Blue Chip Conference win.
Levi Pahmeier was credited with the lone RBI for the Warriors with a sacrifice in the last of the fifth inning, scoring Coy VanMeter.
