Over 70 middle school track and field programs across the state competed in the Indiana Middle School State Championships last weekend on the campus of Indiana State University.
Locally, one athlete ended up on the podium while another relay team broke their own school record during the meet.
Shakamak eighth grader Leo Miller placed sixth in the boys high jump. Miller cleared 5 feet, 8 inches to earn a top-8 finish and land on the podium.
The eighth grader cleared the opening mark of 5-04 on his first attempt and needed two jumps to clear 5-06. At 5-08, Miller cleared the bar on his first leap but failed at 5-10.
Two other athletes also cleared the bar at 5-0, but both missed on their first attempt which allowed Miller to claim 6th.
Clark-Pleasant 8th grader Josh Longue won the event by clearing 6-0.
The North Knox Middle School girls also had five athletes competing in the state meet.
The 3,200-meter relay team of Katie Wolfe, Bristol Fleener, Eva Claycomb and Emma Telligman posted a time of 11 minutes, 6.95 seconds which was good for 11th overall in their heat and 24th overall.
Although the time was not good enough for a medal, the quartet did end up breaking their own school record for the third time this season.
Seventh grader Kendal McGuire also competed for the Lady Warriors. The NK top sprinter placed 5th in her heat of the 200 with a time of 28.07 which was good for 26th overall.
