SOFTBALL
SULLIVAN 25, Terre Haute North 11: The Lady Arrows did not think a five-run lead heading into the seven inning was a big enough cushion Monday night against the Class 4A Patriots. Sullivan put the game away by scoring 10 runs in the top of the seventh inning, improving to 4-2 on the season.
Jaylynn Hobbs delivered the big hit of the seventh, belting a 3-run home run to center for a 21-10 lead. The big fly was the sophomore’s third homer of the spring.
Rachel Eslinger and Kate Alsman followed with run-scoring singles. Eslinger’s RBI single, which made it 24-10, was the freshman’s second hit of the inning.
As a team, the Lady Arrows matched their 25 runs with a season-high 25 hits. A total of seven different players recorded at least three hits, led by Mylee Vandevender recording four hits in seven trips to the plate.
Kate Ridgway gave Sullivan an early 2-0 lead just two batters into the game. The senior belted a 2-run home run, which was the first of two longballs on the night. The University of Evansville signee added another 2-run shot in the top of the fifth inning which gave the Arrows a 14-5 lead. Ridgway finished the game 3 for 5 at the dish with six RBI and scored three runs.
Aphtyn Earley also left the yard Monday, with a 3-run blast in the third inning, which gave Sullivan a 7-3 lead. Earley finished 3 for 5 at the plate and scored three runs. The junior is batting a blistering .545 on the season with three home runs and 13 RBI.
All nine starters in the Arrows’ lineup recorded a hit. Eslinger and Kate Alsman — No. 8 and No. 9 hitters, respectively — collected three hits apiece. Alsman drove in a pair of runs.
Ridgway went the distance in the circle to earn her fourth win of the season.
Sullivan (4-2) has won four straight and has 68 runs in the four wins.
The Arrows play host to White River Valley on Wednesday.
Barr-Reeve 6, Shakamak 3: The visiting Vikings jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never relinquished the advantage.
Shakamak pulled to within 4-3 in the home half of the third when Abbi Gilbert smacked a 3-run homer but it would be the final hit of the game for the hosts.
Barr-Reeve added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Karlye Graber entered the circle in the fourth inning to pitch for the Vikings and struckout the first seven batters she faced. Graber ended up with 10 punchouts in her four innings of relief and allowed only a walk.
Madelyn Kennett, Jama Ewers and Brylee Wilson added singles in the loss for the Lakers.
Shakamak (0-3) was scheduled to host Terre Haute South on Tuesday, weather permitting.
BASEBALL
Terre Haute North 7, Shakamak 3: Facing their fourth straight Class 4A opponent to start the season, the Lakers dropped to 1-3 on the year with Monday’s road loss.
Dolton Fiscus gave Shakamak an early 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the top of the second, scoring freshman Madden Husband.
But the momentum would be short-lived, as the hosts plated two runs in the home half of the frame, which was the start of seven unanswered runs.
Jax Cox lined a 2-run single in the top of the seventh inning for the final two tallies of the game.
Husband and Riley Huckaby added singles in the loss for the Lakers.

BOYS GOLF
SHAKAMAK 160, Washington (2) 181: The Lakers broke a nearly 26-year school record with their 9-hole score on Monday. The 160 team score was three shots better than the 1998 Lakers’ team score of 160.
Senior Mason Barton earned medalist honors with a round of 38 which was one stroke better than teammate and No. 5 golfer Wyatt Barcus.
Freshman Maddox Barton (41) and senior Will Miller (42) rounded out the Lakers’ record-breaking round.
Blaise Newton also played and carded a 45 for the Lakers.
“This is a dream team to me,” Lakers’ coach Scott Smith said of the school record. “I don’t know what I did to deserve to coach this team … I just can’t put it into words.”
Barcus is new to the team after playing for the Lakers’ baseball team last year.
“We had to work the baseball swing out of him a little bit, but he is a very solid addition to our team,” the Lakers’ coach said.
Monday’s match at Country Oaks was originally scheduled as a triangular with Washington Catholic also playing. But with the threat of inclement weather in the area, Hatchets’ coach Trey Miller decided to split his team up into two different squads and have the meet run as two dual matches. Washington’s first team was paired against the Cardinals and easily won, 157-242.
“We normally would have played in foursomes, but with the threat of weather, we decided to split it up so we could get as many kids on the course as possible while also saving time,” Miller said. “I split my team up as evenly as possible. It (the format) was a little screwy, but at the same time that’s just spring weather for you. The main thing is they all got in nine holes and it worked out.”
Washington has a total of 21 players on its roster with only five varsity spots for each match.
Shakamak returns to the links Saturday at the Northview Invite at Forest Park Golf Course in Brazil.
