Local Tennis and Softball Roundup: Arrows dominate on courts and field; Warriors roll

GIRLS TENNIS

 

 

Sullivan 5, Vincennes Rivet 0: The Lady Arrows improved to 3-0 on the season with the shutout over the visiting Patriots on Friday. 

 

Sullivan dropped just seven games in the entire match while winning in straight sets across all five positions.

 

Mercedes Ferree cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 1 singles court before Ally McKinney earned a pair of 6-0 wins at No. 2 singles.

 

Emma Couch earned the first singles win of her varsity career with a 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 3 spot. Couch was filling in for regular singles’ player Izzy Jenkins who missed the weekend matches due to prior obligations.

 

Ella King and Parker Mischler made quick work at the top tandem spot with a 6-0, 6-0 win.

 

At No. 2 doubles, Lexi Deckard and Isabelle Harris capped the shutout with a 6-0, 6-2 win.

 

The win marked the first varsity victory for Harris.

 

 

SOFTBALL

 

 

SULLIVAN 18, Washington 1: Kate Ridgway recorded three hits, drove home two runs and scored four times in the Class 2A No. 11 ranked Lady Arrows’ romp on Saturday.

 

Sullivan, who improved to 8-4 on the season, scored nine times in the top of the seventh inning.

 

Lexi Grindstaff and freshman Addi Fosdick recorded a pair of hits in part of Sullivan’s 11-hit attack.

 

In addition to the 11 base knocks, the Lady Arrows took advantage of eight base on balls and six Lady Hatchet miscues in the field.

 

Mylee Vandevender, Jaylynn Hobbs and Grindstaff all recorded doubles in the first inning as Sullivan scored five times in the frame. 

 

Hobbs earned the win in the circle by pitching three innings of relief. The sophomore scattered three hits, allowed one unearned run and fanned five batters.

 

Calli Stearley made her varsity pitching debut and recorded the final three outs of the game. The freshman recorded one strikeout in her appearance. 

 

Sullivan (8-4) plays host to North Knox on Monday. 

 

 

NORTH KNOX 21, Evansville Bosse 1 (5): The Warriors improved to 4-2 on the season with the lopsided home win.

 

After taking a 6-0 lead in the first, the Warriors put the game away by scoring 10 times in the second inning.

 

Mattilynn Ashley recorded a 2-run double in the first, while Reagan Jones and Javen Miller added 2-run singles in the second. 

 

Freshman Jonna Myers recorded her first career hit and RBI in the win.

 

All nine players in the Warriors’ starting lineup recorded at least one hit, led by Gracie LeRoy’s 3 for 4 effort.

 

Balee McClure, Ally Crist, Ashley, Malli Lyons and Jones all recorded two hits.

 

Miller went the distance in the circle to earn the win and fanned eight batters.

 

North Knox (4-2) travels to sectional foe Sullivan, ranked No. 11 in last week’s Class 2A state rankings,  on Monday.

 

 

Clay City 11, North Central 1 (6): The Class 1A No. 1 ranked Eels broke open a close game by scoring seven times in the last of the sixth inning to enforce the mercy rule.

 

Bayleigh Wright singled and scored in the top of the third inning for the Ladybirds’ lone run of the game. 

 

Shelby Seay and Mykenzie Wence accounted for the other two hits of the game for North Central with singles. Seay also stole a base in the loss.

 

Hannah Harris and Lexi Thompson both hit home runs in part of the Eels’ 10-hit attack.

 

North Central (4-2) travels to Vincennes Lincoln on Monday.
