BOYS BASKETBALL 

 

 

SULLIVAN 43, North Putnam 38: After a sluggish first half, the Golden Arrows got on track over the final 16 minutes of play in Friday night’s tough Western Indiana Conference road win.

 

The Cougars held Sullivan to just 13 points in the first half in building a 11-point lead. But the Arrows stormed back with 16 points in the third quarter before outscoring the hosts 14-3 over the final eight minutes of play for the come-from-behind win.

 

Paul Ridgway tallied nine of his game-high 19 points in the fourth quarter to pace the Arrows. The sophomore sank 5 of 6 free throws in the fourth as the Arrows connected on 8 of 12 on freebies in the final frame.

 

Cooper Bock joined Ridgway in double figures with 10 points.

 

Carson Granby (8), Carter Mischler (4) and Sam Fathauer (2) rounded out the scoring with a combined 14 points in the win.

 

Sullivan improved to 3-1 on the season and 1-1 in league play. The Arrows travel to conference rival Greencastle Friday night before hosting Edgewood on Saturday.

 

 

 

SHAKAMAK 79, North Knox 71: The visiting Lakers built a large enough lead in the opening 16 minutes of play to stave off the Warriors’ furious rally in the second half.

 

Shakamak took control of the with a 17-4 advantage in the opening period and led 41-20 at the break.

 

Jaden Johnson erupted for 18 of his career-high 28 points in the second period as the Lakers extended their lead.

 

After Shakamak won the third quarter by two more points, the Warriors found a groove in the final frame.

 

Braxton Yenne and Cole Kerns combined for all 36 points for the hosts in the final eight minutes of play. The 36 points is believed to be a score record for most points scored in a single quarter of play.

 

Yenne finished with a team-best 28 points in the loss, matching his career high set last season while Kerns netted 23. All of Kern’s points came in the second half.

 

Kyson Parker scored all 11 of his points in the second period, giving the Warriors three players in double digits.

 

Jalen Johnson (18), Case Terrell (13) and Linden Jenkins (9) combined for 40 points for the Lakers, while Madden Husband (8) and North Central transfer Mason Young (3) rounded out the scoring.

 

The Lakers finished 25 of 35 from the charity stripe.

 

One night later the Lakers cruised past Washington Catholic 83-7. Shakamak outscored the hosts 39-3 in the first period.

 

Terrell and Hart Buell netted 11 points apiece to pace the Lakers as 12 different players found the scoring column.

 

The Lakers’ defense held the overmatched Cardinals scoreless in two of the four quarters.

 

With the two weekend wins, Shakamak improved to 3-2 on the season.

 

 

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

 

 

SULLIVAN 56, North Putnam 27: The Lady Arrows jumped out to a 21-3 lead after the first eight minutes of play Friday night and never looked back in the conference win. Jacie Wilson led the quick start by scoring eight of her game-high 18 points in the opening frame.

 

After the Cougars outscored Sullivan by eight in the second period, the Lady Arrows put the game away with an 18-6 advantage in the third frame.

 

Katherine Sarver added 17 points in the win, while freshman sensation Rigley Goodman was the third Lady Arrow to reach double figures with 10 points.

 

Ally McKinney (9) and Destiny Gaines (2) rounded out the scoring with 11 points.

 

The Lady Arrows returned home the following night and cruised to a lopsided 63-19 triumph.

 

For the second straight night Sullivan started out strong with a 21-point first quarter for a 15-point cushion.

 

Wilson once again led the charge with 26 points and Goodman added 14 points.

 

Sarver (9), McKinney (7) and Avari Kelley (7) combined for 23 points.

 

With the pair of wins, Sullivan improved to 7-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play.

 

The Lady Arrows plays host to Shakamak on Tuesday.

 

 

SHAKAMAK 48, Loogootee 36: The Lady Lakers improved to 5-3 on the season with Saturday’s road win.
