GIRLS BASKETBALL
Edgewood 57, Sullivan 55: The Lady Arrows’ offense erupted for 20 points in the opening eight minutes of play in Saturday night’s Western Indiana Conference matchup.
But Ally Bland made it all for not. The Mustangs guard knocked down a long jumper from the left wing as time expired to send the hosts to a second straight loss.
Tied at 55, Bland was able to release the ball just ahead of the final horn for the game-winner. She finished with a game-high 24 points.
After jumping out to a 20-14 lead in the first, Sullivan led by one heading into the final eight minutes of play. The Mustangs outscored the Arrows, 17-14 in the final frame.
Avari Kelley and Katherine Sarver netted season-high totals of 14 points to pace the Sullivan offense. Kelley went for nine points in the opening frame to help the hosts out to a fast start.
Freshman sensation Rigley Goodmad gave Sullivan three players in double figures with 13 points.
Jacie Wilson and Ally McKinney rounded out the scoring with eight and six points, respectively.
Sullivan (4-2, 0-1) finished 15 of 20 from the free-throw line in the loss.
White River Valley 44, Shakamak 39: The Lady Lakers dropped their first game of the season to their Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference and Class 1A Sectional rivals Saturday afternoon.
Shakamak carried a 22-18 advantage into the locker room at the break, but the Wolverines outscored the visitors in each of the two frames in the second half, including by a 12-7 margin over the final eight minutes of play.
Madleyn Kennett led the Lakers with 12 points, while Chase Hammond (9) and Elayni Stone (7) combined for 16 points in the loss.
Izzy Avila poured in a game-high 22 points to lead the Wolverines.
Shakamak (3-1, 1-1) traveled to Bloomfield on Tuesday.
GIRLS WRESTLING
The Sullivan girls wrestling team placed 12th in the field of 23 teams over the weekend at the Ben Davis Invite.
Rachel Ramirez was the Lady Arrows’ top performer, placing 4th in the 125-pound division. The junior, who is a two-time girls state finalist, picked up four wins by pin fall on her way to the third-place match. She needed just 18 seconds for her fastest fall of the day while needing just 37 ticks in another win.
Destiny Gaines (115) and Landrie Fifer (125) both won a pair of matches, while Brylee Wilkinson (100) and Kylee Arnett (190) both won one of three matches.
Gaines had a win by pin and a technical fall (21-6).
